and the approximate location of Cheia. Cheia is approximately 40Km
from Brasov, 160Km from Bucharest.
If you are coming on a course we will organise transport,
otherwise please ask for more information
Getting to Romania from
the UK
Most flights arrive in Bucharest, which is 3
hours direct flight from London. British Airways, and the Romanian
national airline, Tarom, fly from Heathrow direct to Bucharest.
Several other airlines offer indirect flights from London or a UK
regional airpor, via a major European airport.
Stop press: from 15 January 07 budget airline Wizz air is offering cheaper flights from London Luton to Bucharest (Baneasa) http://wizzair.com/
To reach Cheia from Brasov
by road:
Follow the Brasov-Pitesti road, through
Bran to Moieciu de Jos. Here turn left to Moeiciu de Sus in the
centre of the village (main junction with shops each side), and
follow the road up the valley to Cheia.
Cheia begins after going through a narrow
section of gorge. Immediately after the gorge on the right is the
Cheila de Gradesti hotel complex. Casa de la Rau is the first house on the right, approximately
400 metres further up the valley.
To reach Cheia from Brasov
by bus:
From
Autogara 2 (doi) take the bus to Moieciu de Jos. Get off at the
junction in Moieciu de Jos, described above, and walk left in the
direction of Moieciu de Sus. After around 100m wait for the next
bus on the right, opposite the entrance to the bus garages. Take
the bus to Moieciu de Sus, and ask to be let off at Cheia.
Note
Bus destinations are written on a board inside the bus front window.
Not all buses connect with a bus to Moieciu de Sus - you could have
a 2 hour wait, so ask at the bus station.
Some buses go straight through to Moieciu de
Sus.
To reach Cheia from Bucharest
Airport, (Otopeni).
Trains run from Gara de Nord station in the centre of Bucharest,
to Brasov main station, from where you can take a bus, see above.
Minibuses run from nearer the centre of Bucharest to Brasov
main station. Take the airport express bus (no. 783) to Piazza Romana and then a taxi, asking for the Maxitaxi station for Brasov (cost 50-100 new Leiu). From Brasov take a bus to Cheia, see above.
Taxis can be hired in advance for approx. 120Euro.
Hire a car and drive
Major international, and some local, car hire companies operate out of Arrivals. Drive time 3-4hours.
It's often difficult to see speed limit signs so a rough guide is 40-45Km/hour in built up areas and near major junctions, 90-100Km/hour on major roads (usually those with an E, for European, in front of the number). There are lot's of police speed checks, and more recently speed cameras, so we advise keeping to the speed limits.
Leaving the airport turn right on the road to Ploiesti and Brasov. This road leads out of the city, across a large plain, gently climbing into the mountains before winding up the Prahova valley past several small towns / villages, including Sinia, Busteni and Predeal. Shortly before Predeal the road crosses a bridge
built as a long turn. Very shortly after the end of the bridge is a left turn ( and maybe traffic lights), with a police control tower opposite, on the right side. Turn left and follow the road up and then hairpins down, eventually flattening and arriving alongside Risnov. Keep on the main road with Risnov on your right. When you come to the main Brasov-Pitesti road, turn left in the direction of Pitesti, continue on to Brasov, and follow the directions given above from Brasov.
